"I went to the Fortune Teller"
Warning: If you are opposed to checking out the competition, please
disregard the following:
I am driving home from the grocery store the last week, and these
pseudo-plastic turquoise and black signs are posted on the telephone poles in
my neighborhood with the words "Elk Grove Psychic" and a phone number. I
have to admit, I am curious what my competition is doing and having a few
hours to myself the other day, I decided to visit the other psychic in my small
town.
The place of business sits on a busy part of the older, and original part of the
town. I had to park on a side street. There was a sign - $10.00 for a psychic
palm reading with 3 questions. Good. I entered the door and was greeted by a
voice coming from what I could assume is the kitchen, and I overheard, "OK I
have to go!" and a click of a cordless telephone button. The psychic came from
behind the dark camel drape that separates the kitchen from the nicely
draped windows and containing Louis XV knock-off furniture in the front room
and dining room of this home. She asked if I wanted a reading. I answered that
I wanted the special on the sign outside. She introduced herself with a first
name that I will only identify with "Y". Yes, it was Y. After all these years. She
invited me to a screened off area on the far side of the living room.
She asked that I place the hand that I write with, palm up on the table, with
Ganesha in his elephant glory and a small stack of business cards between us.
She asked me to state my full name and birthday. I did. She looked with intent
into my palm and told me that I was going to live a very long life. I paused and
then told her as long as my relationship with Miss Clairol was good, that may
be true. We shared a laugh. She then leaned back and crossed her arms
across her body. It was a warm early spring day and she was dressed in a
printed flower skirt, dusty rose tank top; her brassy blond hair with some
outgrowth pulled back and clipped up with one of those 'jaws'-type clips. Her
fingernail polish was starting to chip (I wear none, so I am just describing her).
She clearly is a Mother, Daughter, and maybe even a Grandmother.
She then asked for my first question. I told her I was going to move in the next
few years (this is true) and I wanted to open a business when I do. She asked
me what my career was and I told her what I do for a living (those of you for
whom I read already know that I work in education and that I do readings as
well). She asked what would the business be and I told her that it would be a
place where women could come and unwind and get a candle or some nice
smelling aromatherapy products when they had a bad day (this is also true).
She told me it will be a success because I pour so much of my own interest
into it, that it will be like my little baby (all my businesses are my babies).
She asked for my second question; I asked how was my health going to be. She
said that it was good and I was going to live a long life (this was already
revealed to me). Dang! Blew that question.
She asked me for my third question. Hmmmm. I thought a minute, then asked
if I will be happy in my old age. The answer was "Yes, but.." OH NO! Here it
comes...the but. She finished her sentence"...there is something like family
that is pulling on you and surrounding you with negativity." I nodded my
head, wondering what was going to be the next sentence out of her mouth, all
the while knowing exactly the content of it for sure.
I then let he ease me into the pitch; the cleansing. She went on to explain that
I have negativity around me and to release it, I need a cleansing. I asked
dumbly what that was all about. She began to tell me about white sage, how to
light it and let the scent of it surround me and carry the negativity off. Oh, I
said. She them told me that her cleansings were $75.00 but since I had a
reading today, she will deduct $20.00 off for me. I declined, stating I had
children to pick up from school (which was true) and I will have to wait. She
gave me her name on a business card and I paid her the $10.00 and left. All in
all, I spent less than 20 minutes there, front greeting to exit. Don't take me to
the casino, I might blow through the wad too fast.
This same individual, who I will only identify as "Y", called me many years ago
and told me that "this was her town" and that she was going to "turn me in". I
really thought I was talking to Mrs. Mayor-of-the-Time, who could rightly bear
the title of "My Town". I copied her name that showed up on the caller ID, went
to the county recorders office, and saw that she was involved with some small
claims court suits in the past decade. I never thought of her again until she
introduced herself to me. Y.
Small world; even smaller town.
