In addition to a Full Moon on December 31st, New Year’s Eve will be considered a “Blue Moon”, meaning it is the second Full Moon within a 31 day cycle. This doesn’t happen often, according to Katerina Reif-Derrico, author of Blue Moon Origins and Traditions.
