When you use anointing and blessing oils, sachets and herbs, you magnify and consecrate
your candle to your purpose intended
After you have cleansed and carved out symbols or names (if need be) onto your candle,
it is time to apply anointing and blessing oils, sachets and herbs to your candle. The use
of these items will clarify and give strength to your intention and work. The quantity of
items may be one or a combination of more than one item. If planning to use more than
one oil or herb, it is suggested that you wash your hands in between steps with Florida
Water, a traditional citrusy-floral cologne used in spiritual work. You may now place the
second layer of oil on top of your first one. The only exception to that is if you are using
various oils from a related family (i.e. oils from the money drawing family such as pay me,
money stay with me, prosperity, money come to me, etc.) In this case, washing your
hand in between is not necessary.
How to Apply the Oil
Now that you have assembled your items and have written out your petition paper or
desire, it is important to decide which hand movements to use when applying the oil to
the candle before commencing the work. Below are three different traditional techniques
with each method and purpose described in detail
NOTE: It is important to the success of your candle burning work to apply the oil correctly
or else you will have mixed results ore a candle that will not perform for you in either a
positive or negative manner.
The UP Technique of Release, Reverse and Banish Energies
The anointing of a candle to release you from a condition requires you to anoint the
candle from the base to the top with the appropriate oil to banish, send away, release
and reverse that particular energy back into the Universe and/or to the point of origin or
the sender.
Start at base of candle and slide Finish at candle wick tip
oiled hands towards top of candle
Holding the candle in your oiled hands, you will slide your hand in one direction from
base of candle to the tip of the wick (see photo). You will NOT slide your hand back down the
candle to the base, but release candle at tip and then re-grasp candle at the base and
repeat the motion, stating your intentions each time you slide your hand from base to tip.
The DOWN Technique of Drawing, Bringing or Calling in Energies
The anointing of a candle to bring, draw or call in conditions that are welcome requires
you to anoint the candle from the tip of the candle to the base with the appropriate oil to
bring in the particular energy from the Universe to you.
Holding the candle in your oiled hands, you will slide your hand in once direction from tip
of candle to the base (see photo). You will NOT slide your hand back up to the top, but
release the candle at the base and then re-grasp the candle at the top and repeat the
motion, stating your intentions each time you slide your hand from tip to base.
The UP AND DOWN Technique for Banishing and Drawing in Energies
(Most commonly used for two colored or double action candles)
Many people who do candle work will use two colored candles, most commonly known as
“double-action” candles to work both way for them in the particular situation. These
candles commonly come in red/black, green/black and white/black. There are those who
make their own candles and these color combinations may be personal to each
individuals needs.
To anoint a candle in this manner, you would need to put the different oils in your
hands, one for each condition and grasping the candle horizontally the candle in the
center with the appropriate color, move from center to ends (see photos) alternately, moving
the banishing or black prayer or intention first, then the other color hand and intention
second. See captions under photos to get the idea.
The TWISTING Technique
This technique is used when you need to take control, manipulate or command over the
proceedings; such as court cases, the law, a marriage, “bend over”, commanding,
controlling or compelling individuals that are making life difficult by causing drama for the
ones around them.
In this situation, you would use the oils in correlation to the condition, them while
grasping the candle with both hands horizontally (see photo), using a “wringing” movement (as
in wringing out a washcloth), and stating your intention or prayer connected to the
situation.
Using HERBS with Candles
After oiling and imparting your intention or prayer into the candle, you may apply
appropriate herbs and spices to the candle to boost their efficiency. For example, using
love oils on a red or pink candle then rolling the candle in ground cinnamon, is a
traditional method of “heating up” a love spell because of the warming qualities of
cinnamon.
To apply herbs, simply sprinkle a fair amount onto a plate, wax paper or brown paper
bag, rolling the oily candle back and forth over the spices, then proceeding with your
candle burning ritual.
Using SACHET POWDERS with Candles
There are different ideas that exist about the using of sachet powers or “powders”, which
consist of talcum powder with ground herbs and drops of the essential oils used in
creation of the anointing oils for the particular situation. Some schools of thought think
that the sachet powder is applied in lieu of herbs and spices; some believe that sachet
powders are applied last, after the oil and herb or spice. One common thread in these
different modalities is the reason for blowing the sachet powder onto the candle (as
opposed to rolling the candle in sachet like herbs) (see photos).
Sprinkling the sachet on candle Spreading the sachet powder
Catching spilled powder with oiled candle Rolling oiled candle in sachet powder
African traditions give history and substance to blowing the sachet onto the candle. The
breath of each individual contains their “ache” or “ashe” or “spirit”, and to partake in the
ritual of blowing the sachet onto the candle imparts their very own spirit is now on the
candle, and that makes this candle personalized for that particular person. It is also
considered an effective was to evenly distribute the fine milled product over the candle,
which is cost effective.
To do this, simply hold the candle upright in one hand and quickly rotate it around as
you blow across your other palm filled with sachet.
Using these Techniques with 7-day Glass "Novena" Candles
The same use of oils, herbs, spices and sachets for free standing candles can be used on
glass candles with little variation. First, creating "wells" in which your oil would be held is
the first step since you cannot carve any names with ease, into the top of the candle
wax. Take a clean knife or phillips (cross-top) screwdriver, and carve circular holes
("wells") into the wax. Wipe or shake out any excess wax.
Pour your oils into the "wells" and place a few drops on the area that is not carved on top
of the candle. For banishing, rotate your index finger of your dominant hand, or the hand
you write with in a clockwise motion, voicing your intention or prayer while doing this
motion. For candle work to draw, call or bring in something, speak your intention or
prayer while circulating in a counter-clock wise manner.
You may then sprinkle the herbs, spices and sachet powders lightly over the entire
surface of the candle in the glass.
Once you have finished this step, you are now ready to light your candle.
